Steps to Making the Nigerian Meat Pie

How to Make Nigerian Meat Pie

Before you start cooking make sure all your utensils and equipment are clean including your cooking area. As I will always say; hygiene is very important when it comes to what we eat.

Let’s get started;

Step 1

Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix well In a large bowl.

Step 2

Add the cold and butter to the flour mixture. Use your pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

Gradually add the cold water, a little at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Make sure the dough is smooth and not sticky. You may not need to use all the water.

Step 4

Divide the dough into two portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to handle.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet, be sure that it is on medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.

Step 6

Add the minced meat to the skillet and cook until browned.

Stir in the diced carrots and potatoes, and cook for a few minutes until they start to soften.

Step 7

Add the thyme, curry powder, bouillon cube (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Dissolve the flour in the 1/2 cup of water and add it to the meat mixture. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Using a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a round cutter (about 4-6 inches in diameter) to cut out circles from the dough.

Step 9

Place the meat filling in the center of each dough circle. Be careful not to overfill.

You can now fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and press the edges together. Use a fork to crimp the edges and make sure that the pie is sealed.

Step 10

Place the meat pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Beat the egg and brush the tops of the pies with the egg wash to give them a golden color when baked.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the pies are golden brown.

Remove the meat pies from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.

Please do not worry if you don’t get it the first time, no one does. However, you can always come back and refer to this recipe and then, try again. The more you try it, the more you get better at it.
