Steps to Making Nigerian Chin Chin

How to Make Nigerian Chin Chin

Before you start cooking make sure all your utensils and equipment are clean including your cooking area. As I will always say; hygiene is very important when it comes to what we eat.

Let’s get started;

Step 1

Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg in a large bowl, and mix well to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 2

Add the room-temperature butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

beat the eggs, add the milk, and Mix well in a separate bowl.

Pour the egg and milk mixture into the flour mixture. Stir until the dough comes together. You may need to use your hands to knead the dough lightly until it forms a smooth, non-sticky ball.

Step 4

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for about 10-15 minutes.

Step 5

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Try to keep the thickness even to ensure uniform cooking.

Step 6

Using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut the dough into small squares or rectangles. You can make the pieces as small or as large as you like, but traditionally, they are about 1/2 inch wide.

Step 7

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat enough vegetable oil to submerge the Chin Chin pieces. The oil should be heated to about 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface immediately.

Step 8

Fry the cut dough in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Stir occasionally to ensure even frying.

Fry until the Chin Chin pieces are golden brown and crispy, about 2-5 minutes per batch.

Step 9

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried Chin Chin from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Allow the Chin Chin to cool completely. They will become more crunchy as they cool.

Please do not worry if you don’t get it the first time, no one does. However, you can always come back and refer to this recipe and then, try again. The more you try it, the more you get better at it.
